It is a true and heart rending account of how 4 year old Tova survived Auschwitz. “My survival depended on my ability to judge the mood of my captors,” she writes. Tova, at the age of 5, accepts this fate as the reality of being Jewish. Her mother sustains a severe head injury in a beating given because she was caught stealing a single potato.

It is up there with the Diaries of Anne Frank. 5 million Jewish children were murdered. Her memory is astounding. Her hometown in Poland had 13,000 Jews in 1939.
One morning she awakens in her bunk to find her bunkmate, also a young girl, has died of starvation during the night. Terrifying though these experiences were, there is a lot of light in this book adeptly woven in by the author.
